Learning Zone  »  English  »  Reading for Pleasure: Whitkirk Waterstones

Welcome to Whitkirk Waterstones! Whitkirk’s new and improved library. Throughout this academic year teachers have been busy organising and renovating our library . This is to ensure that children have a wide range of texts available in a cosy, inviting area in school. We would like to take this opportunity to thank parents for their donations towards our library. The books you have donated will be enjoyed by so many.

During  the year your child has lots of  exciting reading opportunities. From daily reading within class, World book day, whole class texts, story time to Mystery reader activities.  We have designed the curriculum this way in order to promote the love for reading around school and the  community.

Home reading

Parents can support their child’s reading journey through regular reading at home. Reading to and with your child every evening for at least ten minutes can make a dramatic difference to a child's achievement within school. A report from the Oxford University Press highlighted the importance of parents reading with their children. 'Children who read outside of class are 13 times more likely to read above the expected level for their age'.

Throughout the year children at Whitkirk can strive towards reading awards for their home reading. This includes a certificate, reading badge and a visit to one of schools ‘ Reading Café’s!’ Children can enjoy a  delicious hot chocolate  in their class reading area for showing their enthusiasm and dedication to reading.

Mystery Reader

Who could it be? I wonder who will visit us this week?

Cubs have started a new and exciting way of telling stories. Every Friday at 2:50 a Mystery Reader enters the classroom.  It could be any member of staff , parent or community helper. What a treat! This is to further promote the love for reading throughout our school and community! If you would like to visit school for a Mystery Reader session please do not hesitate to contact Miss Emery but shhh … Keep it a secret!
