Reading
Reading at Whitkirk Primary School
Learning to read. Developing a love of reading. Reading to learn.
At Whitkirk Primary School, we believe that reading is at the heart of education. It opens doors to learning, develops imagination, builds knowledge and gives children the confidence to explore the world around them.
Our ambition is for every child to leave Whitkirk as a confident, fluent and enthusiastic reader, equipped with the skills and love of reading that will support them throughout their One Life.
We recognise that becoming a reader is a journey. Children begin by developing strong foundations through our systematic phonics programme, Read Write Inc. As they progress, we focus on developing fluency, comprehension, vocabulary and reading stamina, supported by carefully chosen texts and Reading Plus.
Reading is woven throughout our curriculum, alongside rich opportunities to enjoy books, discover authors and develop a lifelong love of reading. Through our Secret Readers initiative, home reading and family engagement, we work in partnership with parents to support every child's reading journey
Our Approach to Reading

Through high expectations, careful assessment and timely support, we are committed to ensuring that every child develops the confidence, knowledge and skills to succeed.
At Whitkirk, we don't just teach children to read. We inspire them to become readers for life.
