Progression of pitch - Music

At Whitkirk Primary School, we are Musicians! We recognise music as a highly valued form of creativity and an exciting part of the curriculum.

By providing a range of musical experiences throughout school, we aim to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music, whilst at the same time, increasing their self-confidence, creativity, and sense of achievement.

The enjoyment of Music is promoted as well as learning about it and to create it, progressively building on children’s achievements, and skills. Pupils expand their vocabularies, as they progress, with technical Music vocabulary. The National Curriculum is at the core our learning.

Our music curriculum is taught through the scheme ‘Charanga’ which supports all the requirements of the national curriculum. The scheme has been carefully planned to build on children’s knowledge and skills where pupils have the opportunity to perform, listen to, appreciate, review, and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles, and traditions. This supports children to understand the cultural capital of being open minded in their listening as well as knowledgeable about a breadth of musical genres in the world today. Children are also given the opportunity to develop their ability to understand rhythm and follow a beat through performing on a range of musical instruments.

Alongside, Charanga we deliver weekly singing assemblies, various concerts, and performances. Our peripatetic teachers, who come into school to teach music lessons, give opportunities for children to learn and develop their skills from an experienced specialist teacher. These teachers offer: ukulele (whole class teaching to Year 3), guitar and violin (small group lessons to KS2 children).
