Music
Subject Leader – Miss Dougall
At Whitkirk Primary School, we are Musicians! We recognise music as a highly valued form of creativity and an exciting part of the curriculum.
By providing a range of musical experiences throughout school, we aim to engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music, whilst at the same time, increasing their self-confidence, creativity, and sense of achievement.
The enjoyment of Music is promoted as well as learning about it and to create it, progressively building on children’s achievements, and skills. Pupils expand their vocabularies, as they progress, with technical Music vocabulary. The National Curriculum is at the core our learning.
Learning is carefully planned to build on children’s knowledge and skills where pupils have the opportunity to perform, listen to, appreciate, review, and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions. Our curriculum introduces children to music from all around the world and across generations, thereby helping them to develop an understanding of the history and cultural context of the music that they listen to and teaching them to respect traditions and communities. Pupils learn how to play a variety of instruments, which enables them to create notes and read basic music notation. Children also learn how to compose, focusing on different dimensions of music, which in turn feeds their understanding when listening, playing or analysing music.
Alongside our music curriculum, we deliver singing assemblies, various concerts, and performances. Our peripatetic teachers, who come into school to teach music lessons, give opportunities for children to learn and develop their skills from an experienced specialist teacher. These teachers offer: drumming, guitar and violin (small group lessons to KS2 children).
