Reading for Pleasure at Whitkirk
Posted 30th January 2026

A couple of years ago, we made a strong push on developing a love of reading across our school. Recently, we’ve noticed a slight dip in reading for pleasure, and we are working to relaunch this—together with our families.
As part of this work, we are looking closely at our disadvantaged pupils: exploring any barriers they may have, whether they are read with or to at home, and identifying how we can support them further. For children who may not have these opportunities, we are introducing a new reading buddy system in school, as well as dedicated visits to the library with a teaching assistant so they can choose and enjoy books—fiction or non‑fiction—linked to their interests.
And we already have some inspiring examples in school… here is a snapshot of our Year 2 boys who have set up their very own reading club!
