Maths Progression of Pitch   Calculation procedures

At Whitkirk, we aim to develop motivated and resilient mathematicians who can be fluent in the fundamentals of maths and confidently apply what they learn. We want children to perceive themselves as mathematicians, to enjoy maths, and to get excited about the challenges the subject can bring. It is important to us that children see the relevance of maths and why it is needed in life, including in unfamiliar contexts and real-life scenarios.

We aim to do this by:

  • Ensuring our children have access to a high-quality maths curriculum that is both challenging and enjoyable.
  • Ensuring children are confident mathematicians who are not afraid to take risks.
  • Allowing opportunities to revisit and deepen pupil's understanding around concepts and aspects of mathematics
  • Allowing them to know more and remember more.
  • Employing a variety of mastery strategies to ensure fluency and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

MATHS - LONG TERM PLAN

Each year group follow the Maths Long Term Plan which has been adapted from White Rose Maths to suit the needs of the children at Whitkirk. The National Curriculum objectives are broken into blocks of learning, suggesting the amount of teaching time necessary for each unit. Teachers teach the content in the suggested order as the sequence is designed to gradually develop children’s understanding.

At the beginning of lessons, children will complete a ‘Keeping Skills Sharp’ session – this is a revisit of previous learning, typically based around the four operations, to ensure it transfers into their long-term memory. Alongside this, times tables and core number facts are practised daily in lessons - we would really encourage children to continue to practise these at home.

Whitkirk Primary School (89)How you can help your child in Maths

Interest and enthusiasm in your child's learning, makes the biggest difference! From an early age, children are influenced by our preconceptions of subjects. We are extremely fortunate at Whitkirk to have such supportive parents and carers who take an active, positive interest in their child's learning. Your child will receive weekly homework in maths which consolidates key learning from their maths sessions.

For KS1 children, 1- Minute Maths (White Rose Maths) is a fantastic app which delivers targeted practice in short, bite-sized chunks. It is perfect for learning and showing children how much fun they can have with basic number!

We also have a subscription to Times Table Rock Stars: each child in KS2 has an account and is able to test their knowledge (and battle it out with peers)! Please follow the link.
